Dr. Oz Gives Bad Dental Advice
By DrPayet on Mar 18, 2011 in ANNOUNCEMENTS, News You Can Use, Teeth Whitening
Yet again, Dr. Oz is providing bad advice on dental care, and the dental profession is beginning to speak more loudly in protest. As a profession, we are asking Dr. Oz to give air time on his show to any of a number of well-respected dentists to offer better options and to refute the bad information he is disseminating. It is unfortunate that a man as well-respected as he is, is using his prominence with such little disregard for the truth, and it makes me question how much other bad advice he is providing. Buyer beware!

We recommend that you never brush with baking soda because of its abrasiveness. It will wear away tooth structure and gingiva causing your gums to recede and notches to form in your teeth along the gum line. And that often results in sensitivity to temperatures and sweets. Dr. Oz is wrong, Dr. Payet is absolutely right!
Hmm… OK
1st, baking soda is a base (alkaline), not an acid. When combined with an acid, such as lemon juice, in the right quantities it should be neutral.
2nd — Instead of relying on “Dr. Oz” to straighten this out, why not have these dentists start their own national TV show?
I know many people would love to see a TV show on dental care!
It actually is not the alkalinity of the baking soda that is the issue.….it’s the abrasiveness. And how many people do you think will just “happen” to get the quantities “just right” to make it a neutral mixture? If they don’t.….mix abrasiveness and acidity, and you get a very bad result.
Not only that, part of the principle at stake here is that Dr. Oz has a national reputation and stature that the lay public does not question, even though they should. For someone of his stature, who professes expertise, he must be held to a higher standard than his “personal favorite,” à la flavor of the month method.
As to the latter question.……seriously? Yeah, RIGHT! NOT.
